ACCESS FOR THE DISABLED

The Millers are very aware of their social responsibilities to those who are physically and mentally disabled. Over the years, the business has taken all reasonable steps to ensure those less fortunate can enjoy their visit to the Millers.

A disabled toilet is in situ, and staff have undertaken audits of each department. This has resulted in improved access for visitors, and staff are more aware of the access problems associated with disability. As a result of this audit, access to the Restaurant for wheelchair users has greatly improved. A member of staff has attended a seminar on the issue of Access for the Disabled, and we currently await an audit from the governing body. Gordon Disability Action Group has given of their help and advice, and thanks are due to them for their friendly encouragement.

It has long been a concern of The Millers that a large part of the store cannot be accessed by the infirm or those confined to a wheelchair, although we are informed that wheelchair users account for only 3% of disabled persons. Having investigated the possibility of installing a lift, we have found there are considerable difficulties, and at this moment in time, this is not an option for the Company. Many years ago, we were refused planning permission to install a chair lift, another option which must be discounted.

However, some positive steps have been taken. The Copmany purchased a wheelchair for use in the Store, and staff generously donated part of their charity fund to purchase another. Should the wheelchair user be able to climb the stairs (those at the far end of the store are more ambient) staff are pleased to help carry the empty wheelchair upstairs and to assist in bringing it back down. A member of upstairs staff is delegated each day to assist the disabled and will be pleased to bring down any garments or gifts for perusal. An enquiry to downstairs staff will elicit help. This gesture has been well received by our disabled visitors. Our website and our current leaflet clearly state part of the store is inaccessible to wheelchair users. Thanks to a disabled customer for pointing out this omission.

We feel that we have taken all reasonable steps to help disabled visitors enjoy a trip to The Millers. We constantly review the situation and welcome positive contribution from our customers. However, should there be an area we have overlooked, or could improve, please contact a staff member. Currently, we are reviewing how we could assist those with visual or hearing disabilities. We would like to assure all disabled visitors that we continually strive to meet their needs.
